Perks

Invitacion_cayo_2 Tomorrow night, I’m going to a reception for the screening of Cayo (one of the perks of a museum membership!). On my ICal, I have this event categorized as a work event. As a teacher, I’m always on the look out for activities that will enrich the work I do in my classroom, and that includes field trips. I wasn’t able to take my class to El Museo this year (poor planning on my part) but I hope I’ll be able to take them next year, and the movie being screened might be a possible in-class film, as well…maybe as a companion to When I Was Puerto Rican. So, when I go, I’ll be in teacher mode but I’m also definintely appreciating social aspect of the reception and the chance for networking.

I got some good news last week! Last year, I applied to Opening Act, a program that brings after school theatre clubs to schools who have non-existent drama programs. It didn’t work out last year because of funding but they finally got funding for next Fall and my school is next on the list. Next Wednesday, Opening Act is having a Yard Party to raise more money for the program. The contribution is a voluntary 10 or 20 dollars. I’m excited to go and be able to put a face to the schools that benefit from Opening Act. Take a look at the flyer and try to make the yard party if you can! (The short of it: Party’s in a backyard in Chelsea, Tuesday, June 6th at 7pm).

Wooooo!

My mom finally got the kayaks she’s been wanting FOREVER. I can’t wait to try them out. (This probably means she got rid of the canoe, my favorite mode of water transport but c’est la vie…)

I tag Tam and Dana. Have fun!

FYI

Would you like to know what I am doing this summer? I thought so…

1. The last weekend in June, we’ll be in Cape Cod for July 4th weekend.

2. After the 4th of July, through the following two weeks, I will be assisting with a Tech Invitational at the NYCWP.

3. The third week in July, I’ll be at a writing institute at Columbia Teachers College. I also have a wedding the Sunday before (my second appearance at a function of the boyfriend’s family…the first is a sweet 16 in June).

4. On July 22nd (my birthday!), I’m off to Seattle and environs until August 5th, during which time, we will hike and camp for 4 nights around the base of Mt. Rainier on the Wonderland Trail, and take a trip to Portland, and possibly LA (hi, Tam!).

5. August will most likely be spent moving into my new apartment (barring any problems at the closing…), fixing it up and getting ready for a new school year. There may possibly be another trip to Cape Cod.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…summer, hurry up and come.

I think this applies to APs, as well (then again, I’m biased!). In the article, Klein says, “If you put artificial restrictions on human resources, you’re going to lose good people who are up for the job.” I wouldn’t call experience an artificial restriction…would you? My experience has been that younger administrative people are insecure, which manifests itself in a power-hungry attitude and an inability to treat one’s colleagues like colleagues, rather than, say, just big students. But maybe that’s just my AP…
